Naples Medspa Describes Subtle Differences Between Three Popular Anti-Aging Injectable Treatments
When you consider options for reducing the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and crow’s feet, Botox® is likely one of the first minimally invasive remedies to come to mind. That’s because Botox® was the first neuromodulator to be approved by the FDA for cosmetic purposes, making it the go-to injectable anti-wrinkle treatment since 1989.
When assessing Botox® for their specific anti-aging needs, many of our Naples, Florida-area clients come across two other injectable neuromodulators—Dysport® and Xeomin®—that offer similar skin-smoothing results. Naturally, this raises questions such as “what’s the difference between them?” and “which one is right for me?”
Because Tru Glō Medspa offers all three wrinkle-smoothing injectable treatments, we’d be glad to answer both questions for you. Read on to learn more about the subtle differences between these minimally invasive anti-aging treatments so that you can better assess which one might work best for you.
All Three Products are Distinctly Related
Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin® are all produced from neurotoxic proteins found in botulinum-based compounds. As neuromodulators, all three work by relaxing muscles beneath the skin that cause contraction-induced wrinkles and lines. When injected into the muscles, the neuromodulators block the neurotransmission of nerve impulses in the area that contract the muscles. This helps smooth the overlying skin, with results typically lasting from three to six months. All three treatments are similarly performed, with injections into the targeted areas taking from as little as 15 to 20 minutes and resulting in minimal downtime.
Botox® Comes with Brand Recognition
With more than 30 years of use as both a cosmetic and therapeutic treatment (it is also used to treat migraines, muscle spasms, profuse sweating, neck problems, and overactive bladder), Botox® has far more brand recognition than the other two products. On a chemical composition basis, Botox® is primarily differentiated from the others by the addition of a protein that separates from the botulinum toxin after injection.
Tru Glō Medspa finds that Botox® works most effectively to smooth out crow’s feet and glabellar lines (forehead furrows). It can take from 72 hours to a week to notice the full smoothing effects of Botox® and results typically last three months.
Dysport® is the Fastest Acting of the Three
Approved by the FDA for cosmetic use in 2009, Dysport® is essentially a more diluted formulation of Botox® and has a smaller molecular structure. This helps Dysport® achieve a faster—two to three days—smoothing action and allows the botulin toxin to spread to a larger area, though with less of a paralyzing action that can result in the “frozen look.”
We find that Dysport® works best with moderate to severe glabellar lines, as it allows the surrounding areas to move naturally. The smoothing action of Dysport® typically lasts for about four months.
Xeomin® Also Targets Glabellar Lines
Xeomin® differs from the other two by dint of being a “naked” neurotoxin. That is, the product does not include proteins found in either of the other two compounds. Approved by the FDA in 2011, Xeomin® is equally effective at the targeted smoothing of wrinkles and lines as Botox® and Dysport®. Similar to Dysport®, We find that clients achieve the best smoothing results when Xeomin® is used to address glabellar lines. Full smoothing effects are usually noticed within four days to a week, and results tend to last for about four months.
