How Sciton BBL® Literally Turns Back the Clock on Aging
Our southwest Florida-area clients frequently ask us whether the “Forever Young” moniker of Sciton’s BroadBand Light® (BBL) therapy is an exaggeration. While nothing lasts “forever,” the Forever Young name is supported by research showing that BBL® treatments induce age-defying changes to skin cells at the molecular level.
Two different studies have concluded that FDA-approved BBL® transforms the gene expression patterns of aging skin cells to make them act like younger cells. Combined with the skin blemish corrections provided by BBL’s® photothermal energy, this helps improve skin tone and boost skin volume through increased collagen and elastin production. And this rejuvenation is ongoing and long-lasting due to the younger gene expression state of the underlying skin cells.
What is BBL® and What Exactly is it Used For?
Also known as “photofacials” and “photo rejuvenation,” broadband light therapy uses non-invasive light waves to condition and rejuvenate skin anywhere on the body. The treatment has proven effective at treating:
- Sun Damage
- Irregular Texture
- Birthmarks
- Age Spots
- Rosacea
- Sunspots
- Scarring
- Fine Lines
- Sagging Skin
- Freckles
- Enlarged Pores
- Dilated Blood Vessels
- Acne and Acne Scarring
Much of the therapy’s effectiveness at correcting these conditions was initially attributed to the skin’s reaction to the photothermal energy. This energy helps decrease blemishes and addresses other pigmentation issues, while also stimulating the production of collagen and elastin, which helps decrease the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and other skin imperfections. Add in the molecular-level changes to skin cells, and you’ve got a skincare therapy that delivers long-lasting, age-defying skin rejuvenation.
The procedure is also lauded for causing limited downtime and requiring easy-to-follow aftercare instructions.
What is Gene Expression and How Does BBL® Alter It?
Simply put, gene expression describes the cellular process of converting DNA instructions into functional cellular products and activity. For example, DNA has instructions that help regulate the cellular production of protein and other molecules. These instructions act as both an on/off switch to determine when proteins are made, as well as a control switch to regulate the amount of proteins needed.
Two different studies have determined that BBL® treatment induces aging, less-active skin cells to produce proteins associated with younger skin cells. By making the older skin cells behave like younger cells they essentially reverted back to a younger state. When researchers compared BBL® treated skin cells with untreated cells, they found that more than half of the genetic expressions in the BBL® treated cells had reverted to the state of younger skin cells. This, the researchers concluded, proves a case of pure cellular rejuvenation rather than just cellular healing and repair.
Maintaining a Youthful Appearance with BBL®
While one 15-minute BBL® session can help improve skin tone, texture, elasticity, and the overall youthful look of your skin, most Tru Glō Medspa clients achieve the most optimal results with three to five treatments over a six to 24 week period. While studies concluded that those treated with three or more sessions appeared to look nine years younger than their real age on average, Sciton suggests that most people may want to have periodic maintenance treatments to further expand the longevity of the age-defying results.
